This project evolved as a partnership between the Southern Area Domestic Violence Service, ‘Ninko Kurtangga Patpangga’ and Relationships Australia (SA).
This southern based Aboriginal Domestic Violence Shelter houses Aboriginal women and children from many different Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal women are the most at-risk group of suffering injury and death by domestic violence.
A group of women associated with this service came together over a number of weeks where they could sit together yarning while working with a glass artist to create painted-glass shapes and collages. Babies and toddlers sat with us. Not thinking of themselves as artists the women were surprised and inspired by their own talent.
It was about creating a time out space to share stories – to focus on themselves, not as mother’s or partners, but as women in their own right.
Relationships Australia (SA) honours the courage the women showed in letting us sit in their circle.
