Riverland Afghani Families
One ArtThink project that was interesting, involved working with Afghani families living in Renmark in the Riverland region of South Australia. During discussions with the men of the community, we learned that artistic activities would not be preferred by community members, due to their strong Muslim faith and traditional values. Rather, the men asked whether the Program could help them arrange a number of events which would bring local families together and provide a sense of community and connection.
ArtThink staff helped in organising two community celebrations in the Riverland. The first event celebrated the end of Ramadan. In October 2008, a picnic was held at the Monash Adventure Playground in the Riverland area. More than 150 people attended and enjoyed a Halal BBQ and the games were enjoyed by the children. The celebration began with a welcome to country by Mona Akbar, a well known Aboriginal woman who also has Afghani heritage.
An article describing the significance of Mona's visit to the Afghani families can be read here.
The second event was organised in March 2009, for Nowruse (New Year), and was held in the picnic area of Lake Bonney in Barmera.
