Spanish Speaking Communities
The Spanish Speaking ArtThink group brought people together from various Latin American backgrounds and groups. This group represented countries from El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, Chile, and the Dominican Republic.
The ArtThink project engaged this group for three to five months leading up to the family event -
Festival de Alegria.
The ideas of engaging the wider community was important, not only to share the experience of the group's learning, but also as a means of keeping the culture alive through this festivity. Clearly, a connection to culture and traditions was an important factor in the Spanish Speaking communities wellbeing. This idea reflected the need to include families, invite the older and younger generations and invite as many existing social clubs, sporting clubs, religious groups and recreational groups within the wider community.
This event aimed to bring people together and was viewed as an important platform to reach people and share the message that mental health is an important topic for our wellbeing. The idea of integrating dance, culture and traditions, was intrinsic to wellbeing. Festival de Alegria, or, the Festival of Happiness, embraced all of these factors.
It was a great event that involved the community, not only in entertainment and as entertainers, but bringing people together to remind them about the strengths in culture and belonging. It also gave the community clubs and groups an opportunity to be involved in selling food and raising funds for their own groups.
A cultural dance group was also formed, calling themselves, Raices Latinas, Latin Roots, which evolved through members of the Spanish Speaking ArtThink group. This group generates the continuation of culture and dance, and performs at many community functions. The Spanish Speaking ArtThink group also created community radio messages, bringing mental health related issues such as stigma and illnesses out into the open. These messages where aired on various radio programs and played during the event. Festival de Alegria attracted approximately 300 – 500 people. It was a fantastic group effort and had a positive impact on the organisers and the wider community.
